Cricket Mole Insect. The common name is derived from the insect s molelike appearance and underground habits. On the back end it looks like a cricket with cute little fairy wings and a long cigar shaped body.
Nymphs begin at about 1 4 inch long. Mole crickets are cylindrical bodied insects about 3 5 cm 1 2 2 0 in long as adults with small eyes and shovel like fore limbs highly developed for burrowing. Mole crickets occur in all types of rice environment.
It burrows underground and eats the roots of freshly planted veggies.
The mole cricket is a large insect that will typically reach 40 50mm in length during adulthood. This pest burrows in soil and so its front legs are adapted to give it extra strength. They are more common in non flooded upland fields with moist soil.
